Movie and TV awards in the USA?

I have not quite comprehended why people go so insanely crazy for Hollywood types. Have these actors and actresses done something amazing that will save the lives of untold millions? Have they solved mysteries of the universe? I don't get it. Seems about as foolish as honoring losers like Che Guevara or Pol Pot. Zzzzzzzzzzz
